Your Massage Therapist
Andrew Newman
Your needs and goals – like all my clients – are unique. That’s why I approach each person and treatment with an open mind and heart. I draw on the combination of all my learnings in acupressure and massage therapy, and over 20 years of clinical experience. Together we work through a personalised treatment plan to give you back full control of your own health and body.
My goal is to support you and your body to get back to where it naturally wishes to be. We also focus on building your awareness of your own body. This will help you better understand and maintain the positive shifts that occur, and build confidence on your path to healing.
The power of listening
I might be a massage therapist and acupressure expert, but I’m really in the business of listening.
It’s part of why holistically treating stress and trauma-related illnesses is my specialist area. I have seen again and again the toll mental or physical stress can take on a person’s wellbeing. Just taking the time to talk and understand my clients has led this to become an integral part of my practice.
I’m passionate about helping people reawaken to their body’s potential and find a way forward. Even after two decades in the health industry, I continue to be blown away by what is possible – and that all starts with listening and understanding.
My path to the healing arts
My empathetic approach comes from my very real experience of living in a body that seemed to be working against me.
From the age of two, I had a walking disability. I was a toe-walker with no flex in my calf muscles. After two surgeries, I experienced a lot of pain and fatigue during my youth, as well as suffering from asthma, gut health issues and chronic allergies.
These experiences led me to spend a lot of time thinking about food, diet, physiotherapy and other ways could improve my health. My personal challenges drove me to want to help others.
Trained in South Korea and the USA
After studying psychology at university, this passion took me to South Korea, where I undertook further training and studies in acupressure, meditation and Qigong. This was a perfect accompaniment to my earlier years spent training martial arts and tai-chi.
After this I was able to live and work in Los Angeles, New York and Boston. I got to share skills with experienced Massage Therapists, TCM Doctors, Acupuncturists, and healers. Over the years I’ve taken the most effective techniques I could find in acupressure, therapeutic massage, abdominal massage, myofascial release and postural analysis. I’m always looking learn more and get the best results for my clients.
Now living back in New Zealand and working from my clinic in Ponsonby, Auckland, I thoroughly enjoy my work. I never thought I’d be a professional massage therapist but it’s so satisfying getting results and making a difference in people’s lives I can’t imagine doing anything different.
